The Thrill is Gone, But the Memories Remain

--

If you missed an episode of your favorite show in the 90s, you were out of luck.

There was no way to stream it or download it on-demand like today. You simply had to hope that the channel would air a rerun eventually.

For extremely popular shows, you might only have to wait a few weeks or months for a repeat showing. But for more niche programs, a re-airing could take 6 months or even a year! It was devastating for kids to miss episodes of their beloved cartoons and sitcoms. A new episode would air the next week and you’d have no context for the ongoing storylines.

Waiting for the TV Guide

Each day I would eagerly await the newspaper delivery, racing outside when I heard the thud of it hitting our front door. I’d quickly grab the paper and flip through to find the TV guide section. My eyes would light up as I scanned the listings, circling my favorite shows in bright red ink.

The TV guide was my roadmap through the limited programming available in the 90s. I’d carefully comb through, planning my entire evening around the shows I didn’t want to miss. The TV guide gave me a sense of control, allowing me to create a strategy amidst the limited choices.

Though basic by today’s standards, simply browsing the TV guide and selecting shows to watch was an event in and of itself. The excitement of circling those titles and counting down the hours until they aired is a nostalgic memory from childhood.

The Thrill is Gone, But the Memories Remain

Today’s on-demand content world has made waiting for your favorite shows obsolete. While current generations are spoiled for choice, they’ll never experience the anticipation 90s kids felt. The excitement of waiting for the TV guide, rushing home, and gathering with family for appointment viewing created an enriched, shared experience. There was thrill in finally seeing a new episode after waiting all week. You felt invested in the show storyline and characters.

If you missed an episode, you hoped friends could recap or patiently waited until summer reruns. Watching week to week with commercial breaks let your imagination run wild. Cliffhangers left you longing and speculating for days. Streaming allows you to satiate your curiosity immediately with binge watching and lose this sense of wonder.

The nostalgia for delayed gratification and communal viewing of 90s television will linger even as technology progresses. Those shared memories with family and friends watching favorite cartoons and MTV remain priceless.
